It turned out to be a spectacular weekend – Jon Tobey finally made it out steelhead fishing with me! Despite having lived together for a number of years and done all kinds of things from build bars to pick chantrelles, we’d only been fishing together a few times. He messaged me through Facebook the night before his trip – saying he was on the fence about this weekend. “We just had the biggest water event in two weeks, you’ll regret missing this one!”
After cooking up a massive steak dinner, we headed out for an evening of catching up: pool, beer, stories, ideas, ramblings, theories, concepts, fish tales, and of course plans for the following day of steelhead fishing. The next morning with a belly full of bacon, eggs, and chorizo breakfast burritos, washed down with copious amounts of coffee, we loaded the rig and headed for the river.
It turned out to be an exceptional day – both fishing, weather, and other-wise. Flows were still high but dropping steadily – perfect spring steelhead conditions! I spent most of my time helping Jon, but ended up still hooking a few, including one on my first drift! Check out Jon’s blog for the full story!
Jon ended up landing a beautiful wild hen – which I helped manifest for him – the second steelhead of his life and the first in ten years! Playing large ocean run fish on a fly rod takes a lot of practice and a bit of luck, and he did great! He also had a monster that we never saw take off in a blazing run all the way to the tail of the pool, turned, and spit the hook! He was crushed, naturally. We both would have liked to have seen that one!
Its tough to land then with that much line out no matter what you do! Perhaps one day he’ll see the lesson in it – steelhead fishing a school of hard knocks, it takes a bit of luck, you don’t win ’em all, and it’s the ones that get away that keep you coming back! The greatest stories are often about the ones that got away, the ones that keep you up late at night… I’m sure he’ll be back for another shot, like next weekend!
